VLC, the popular free video player software that many folks came to love because on its flexibility to play virtually any video file format (even damaged ones), has a new update that really deserves a shoutout. VLC version 2.1 not only brings new support for surround sound output and improved audio support, but it also brings 4K playback capability for Windows 8 and Mac OS X.
Even though there aren’t many videos out there with Ultra-HD resolution, this is a huge update for VideoLAN as we’re starting to see more and more 4K TVs and computer monitors in the market, and it’s not going to take long to start seeing new content in 4K.
Among other changes VLC 2.1 (codenamed Rincewind) brings updates for iOS and Android. Also there are ports (work in progress) to mobile platforms including for Windows RT, Windows 8.1 (Metro-style version), and Windows Phone 8.
