At an annual conference in India, Google announced a machine-learning program powered by AI to decipher doctors’ prescriptions and notes via photos. This is a step towards making it easier for users to read and understand your doctor’s prescription with Google Lens.
“We’ve started working on the complex process of identifying what’s written on medical prescriptions by building an assistive model to digitise it, using AI, for medical healthcare professionals.” said Google via its Twitter handle.
The Institute of Medicine at the National Academies of Science estimates that 7,000 people die annually from illegible handwriting. Prescription medication errors are responsible for more than 1.5 million injuries in the United States alone; each year.
On Google Lens, the tool will allow users to either take a photo of their prescription or upload one from their photo gallery. A Google representative demonstrated how the software identifies and highlights medications in an image after analyzing it. “This will act as an assistive technology for digitizing handwritten medical documents by augmenting the humans in the loop such as pharmacists, however, no decision will be made solely based on the output provided by this technology.” Currently, the company has not revealed when it plans to release it, users are eagerly looking forward to the feature where they can easily understand doctor’s prescription with google lens.
According to Google, India has the highest number of users of Google Lens, especially its search feature using images & photos. In order to cover more than 100 Indian languages both orally and in text, the company is said to be developing a unified model.
