Last month we reported about Canonical’s plans for its upcoming smartphone ,the Ubuntu Edge. For this project Canonical started a crowdfunding campaign in indiegogo to collect $32 million before August 21. Barely four days to reach the goal and canonical has managed to collect just over $11 million so far. Only one big name has invested in the project, Bloomberg LP invested has paid $80,000 for 100 Edge devices.  This is a great achievement in a short time and everyone knows that the goal was a highly ambitious one to begin with.

To attract investors, canonical even dropped Edge’s price to $695 from initial set price of $830. Due to the price reduction, the company will  now have to produce 33,000 smartphones instead of the planned 28,000.  Our prediction is that the Ubuntu Edge will collect at least $14 million by the August 21 deadline and we are also looking at a possible extension of the deadline for crowdfunding. Ubuntu Edge is a great concept and we hope Canonical will manage to bring this device to the masses. Checkout our sidebar widget from Canonical for real time update on the project fund collection.
