Early this week the European Southern Observatory (ESO) inaugurated the VLT Survey Telescope, which packs a 268-megapixel CCD imaging camera OmegaCAM, and to make the inauguration official, they released the fist image of the stunning Carina Nebula — According to ESO, the largest telescope in the world to inspect the skies in visible light.
The nebula isn’t a random location or the first time it is photographed, as it is an often chosen section of deep space that astronomers like to study, and it always serves as a good spot in the skies to demonstrate imaging acquirement’s capacity.
“It is designed to map the sky both quickly and with very fine image quality.” ESO points out.
It is worth noting that this first image from the VST is not from a single shot. This is a composite from various images that together helped to produce a detailed and colorful view of the subject.
If you want to download this amazing image for your computer desktop, head over to the ESO web page. There you can download the image as wallpaper in different sizes including: 1920×1200 and 2048×1536, or as a JPEG of 10.7 MB, or as a full image of 696.9 MB!
